Recognizing Excellence in Government Cyber Security

Organization:  In its eleventh year, the Symantec Government Symposium – the public-private information security and management event – brings together more than 1,000 senior-level IT, security, management, and business professionals from all levels of government.  For more information, visit

Nomination Deadline:  Thursday, August 1, 2013, 5 p.m. EDT

Awards Presentation:  Symantec will present the 2013 Cyber Awards at the 2013 Symantec Government Symposium on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Awards Objective:  The Cyber Awards will recognize individuals who exemplify excellence in government cyber security through individual contributions to cyber security programs that protect data and systems.  The awards will also recognize thought leaders who have developed and operationalized innovative strategies or programs to address government cyber security challenges.

Award Criteria:  Each award nominee must be a current employee of a national/Federal, regional/ state, or local branch of government or government agency, academia, or a member of U.S. Congress.  The awards will recognize winners in the following categories.  We welcome submissions from U.S. and international governments:

  • National/Federal – Civilian
  • National/Federal – Defense
  • Regional/State and Local
  • U.S. Congress/Capitol Hill
  • Education

Nominees should exhibit strong leadership and an innovative approach, going “above and beyond” daily responsibilities to make a difference in government cyber security.  Nominees will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Thought leadership
  • Exhibition of management leadership
  • Key metrics
  • Contribution to cyber security programs that protect critical national and global data and systems
  • Development and operationalization of innovative strategies or programs to address government cyber security challenges
  • Benefits achieved

Guidelines for Nominators:  Only current government employees or members of Congress qualify for nomination.  We will accept nominations from both U.S.-based and international government entities.  Other third parties/private sector representatives are encouraged to nominate, however, they do not qualify for nomination themselves.  Additionally, third-party nominators must first notify the nominee before submitting a nomination.  Finally, individuals are welcome to nominate themselves.

Selection Committee:  The 2013 Symantec Government Symposium Advisory Group, a public-private partnership comprised of government technology leaders and private sector executives, will review nominations for completeness and content.
